Making Life Better

Citizens Police Academy

One way the South Jordan Police Department is working to make life better is by helping residents have a better understanding of the work that police officers do. When residents understand what is involved with police work, they become valuable partners in developing safe neighborhoods. The Citizens Police Academy is an exciting ten week class and behind-the-scenes look at the South Jordan Police Department. The Citizen Police Academy course meets one night each week for three hours. Classes are held at the South Jordan Police Department, 1600 West Towne Center Drive (10600 South), South Jordan.

Topics covered in the Citizens Police Academy include an overview of the South Jordan Police Department's organization, structure and training. The course will also introduce citizens to the various divisions and their responsibilities such as Detective, Traffic, Victim Services, K-9, SWAT, Gangs and Narcotics. In addition, residents will receive hands-on workshops in areas such as defensive tactics crime scene investigations, and firearms safety. The highlight of the course for many people is participating in an active shooting scenario.

Citizen Police Academy class members are given an opportunity to observe police patrol work through a four-hour ride along experience with a patrol officer. After completing the Citizen Police Academy, class members participate in a graduation ceremony and receive Certificates of Completion. The minimum age for enrollment is 18 years of age. Applicants must not have a criminal record, must complete the application and pass a basic background investigation. Applicants must either work or live in South Jordan. There is no fee to attend the Citizen Police Academy, but class size is limited to 25 students and tends to fill up quickly.

Applications are now being taken for the class starting April 8, 2009 (Thursday). Applications are available online at www.sjc.utah.gov/police or at the South Jordan Police Department. When completed, the applications need to be submitted to the Police Department.
