Slow the Flow" Water-wise Tips
Option 1
1) Obtain a pressure reading at the hose bib. A pressure gage can be purchased at most sprinkler supply stores. If in doubt, design to a maximum pressure of 40 psi. The pressure zones within the city are currently in transition, and pressures higher than 40 psi may be lower by next season.
2) Perform a flow test to measure the flow at the hose bib. A measurement can be taken by using a well-marked 5-gallon bucket and a stopwatch. Multiply the volume of water in the bucket after 20 seconds (the bucket should show each gallon mark) by three to get the flow in one minute. This will give you a flow in gallons per minute.
3) Sketch or draw to scale the areas that need to be irrigated. Most drawings can be drawn at a 1" to 10'.
4) Separate grass areas from shrub and flower bed areas.
5) Take drawing to a sprinkler supply business and they should have a certified irrigation designer who can design your system according to the correct pressure and flow. Most businesses offer this service free upon purchasing irrigation materials.
6) Per South Jordan City Municipal Code 16.30, the system must be designed by a certified irrigation designer and installed by a certified irrigation contractor. You can check the following website to see if a contractor you are considering is certified: http://www.irrigation.org/cert_lookup.asp
Option 2
Choose a certified landscape contractor to design and install your system. Choosing this option ensures that your system will be guaranteed (generally for one year).
